Evolution Counseling Services: Growth & Healing in our Community

With May being Mental Health Awareness Month, we’d like to shed light on areas of our community that are committed to improving the lives of our friends, families, and neighbors.

First Frontier Forward sat down with Ashleigh Nearhoof of Evolution Counseling Services to discuss what the organization is doing for our community, and how you can get involved.

Evolution Counseling Services has been steering kids and families towards success and happiness for nearly five years. The program, serving Blair and Huntingdon County, helps children find their path by offering unique opportunities for growth and healing.

“We wanted to build an agency that was strength-based, client-centered, and focused on people’s abilities.” says Ashleigh. “We really wanted to teach people to be independent and make long-lasting change through really great programs.”

Evolution Counseling Services offers a variety of programs, such as delinquency prevention, functional family therapy, outpatient counseling, trauma-focused programs, and more.

“Most of our programs are youth-driven, but we can offer counseling to anybody,” says Ashleigh. “Our outpatient program is meant for any individual who is seeking counseling. It doesn’t have to be a specific topic. It can be any type of support that they're looking for.”

Ashleigh’s passion for helping others also led to her involvement with Evolution Expressions, a nonprofit whose mission is to assist healthy youth development through strengthening families. Through a variety of programs such as Zumba Fitness, Kids Arts for Healing, and Learning and Loving in Exceptional Situations, the nonprofit promotes the well-being of individuals and families.

“I knew I wanted to help people,” Ashleigh says. “We’re all very unique. We’ve all used different skills in our lives to get to where we are now. I love cake decorating, Zumba, and art. I didn’t realize how big of an impact all those things were in my life and for my own personal mental health until I started teaching them to other people.”

“That’s really how it all started,” Ashleigh continues. “We felt passionate about helping kids and families, and we felt passionate about hobbies in our life. We thought ‘How can we bring those together to create a unique and nontraditional counseling platform that can really help people?’”

Many of Evolution’s programs are 3 to 4 months long. “It’s just a small piece of your timeline that could make a long-lasting change,” says Ashleigh. “One small goal can change the entire track of your next 10 years. If you are struggling at the moment, set yourself some small goals and just achieve those little ones one piece at a time. It can only end positively.”
