Profitable Passion with Dion Brown of Generation N.O.W.

While the holidays are in full swing, it's easy to fall into unhealthy patterns. Not only are we choosing to eat another Christmas cookie but choosing to sit on the couch and watch movies can become a missed opportunity to get out and get active. With the theme of getting healthy and making good decisions for our health heading into 2021, First Frontier Forward got the chance to interview Dion Brown, a shining star in the fitness world here in Blair County, Pennsylvania with his personal training facility 'Generation N.O.W. Transformational Center.' Not only does his passion for fitness sound inspiring, but it has changed the lives of many citizens in the Altoona area.

His journey started with his athletic background in high school. Playing football and running track for the Altoona Area High School, he remained a physically fit individual. Going into college with a football scholarship, he started to realize that this wasn't what he wanted to do. So, he came home, leaving his loving mother quite upset with his choice. "I needed to figure out my passion. I had played sports my whole life. My identity had been tied to sports, but now I'm done." Searching his soul for an answer at the young age of 20, Dion was left with a choice to make. He had to find a job or go back to school.

He knew that going back to school wasn't an option for him but, at the same time, he knew that finding a normal job wasn't right for him either. With fitness being something he'd always been good at, he researched online training programs to get certified as a personal trainer. After receiving his certification, he didn't make any sudden moves. It was on a trip to the Altoona Walmart with his girlfriend where he noticed something. "I noticed there are a lot of 'out of shape' people in this town." 9 out of 10 people he would walk by would look unhealthy and something in him said that he could help change that.

Reaching out to his friends and followers on Facebook, he started by offering free training to a few people who were interested. A friend reached out to Dion after having his father recently passed away. "He said how he didn't want to go down that same path he did. So, I started training him three or four times a week at Mansion Park in Altoona." An older gentleman approached him and asked what his plan for training was, come wintertime. Not having thought that far ahead, Dion said he would probably still be at Mansion Park. Handing him a business card, the man said to contact him about a property in town. Another connection and a few cold training sessions later, Dion decided to tour a property that would very soon become his own personal training facility.

We asked Dion about his decision to not move immediately forward with personal training after he was certified. "I think I was just trying to figure my life out. there were so many directions I could go in. I could have gone back to school to play football. I could've just done something with business. I'd have to say that it was quite a bit of procrastination too, but I finally said to myself that it's now or never."

That phrase is very true also to his style of personal training. "Once you start, you work into a or a pattern of doing things. This all becomes a habit eventually." He encourages those who might second guess themselves when it comes to deciding to start the program or to just start a workout routine. "You don't have to have everything figured out but you have to have a place to start."

We want to thank Dion Brown for his time and participation! Not only is he a role model for those who want to get into a healthier lifestyle, but he shows us a perfect example of how passion can turn into profit!
